    Summer and books – why reading has its own season is a mystery. Perhaps it’s because we supposedly have more leisure time in the summer. You know, lounging by the pool, sunning ourselves on golden sands next to the sea, or lazing away the day in a hammock at home.

    We know that although real estate agents love to keep up with the latest book trends, and crave ways to improve their work-life balance and lead generation, they don’t have a lot of time to devote to reading longer works.

    So, we’ve narrowed down our choices to books that won’t take you months to finish reading but offer tons of value in as few pages as possible. 

    “The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick),” Seth Godin

     “Winners never quit,” right? In “The Dip,” Godin makes the claim that it’s a “spectacularly bad piece of advice.”

    “Never quit wetting your bed?” he asks. Never quit “… that job you had at Burger King in high school?”

    His advice is to “… never quit something with long-term potential just because you can’t deal with the stress of the moment.”

    For many agents, the stress of the moment may be that there’s no commission check on the horizon, or converting leads seems impossible.

    Don’t quit until you consider Godin’s “3 questions to answer before quitting.” 

    “The Dip” isn’t one of Godin’s more recent offerings, but we think it’s one of his best. At only 96 pages, it’s a quick summer read.

    “Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity,” David Allen

    Another oldie but goodie, New York Times best-selling author David Allen shows the reader how to become better organized and, thus, more productive.

    A few of the reviews claim that Allen seems to be stuck in the past with some of his tips—advocating the use of actual file folders rather than using the cloud or your hard drive. Overall, however, he garners 4.5 out of 5 stars at Amazon.com with glowing reviews.

    Learn how to get things done in 352 pages. Heck, you can read this over at your Starbucks tomorrow morning.

    “Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time,” Brian Tracy

    For me, it was picking up the phone to make that first cold call of the day. For you, it may be something else, but agents seem to all have one thing they need to do that they just don’t like doing.

    Brian Tracy has the cure with 21 strategies to get around procrastination. “Read the book, eat your frog by 10:00 a.m., and then feel free to find a restaurant that serves cocktails at lunch,” sums up Laura Vanderkam at FastCompany.com.

    Tracy teaches us how to avoid common distractions, especially prevalent when so many agents are working from home.

    All that, in 144 pages. 

    By the way, get the 3rd edition (published in April 2017) because it contains two chapters that the previous editions don’t offer.

      Some days are diamonds, some days just downright stink. The good news is that you can take the stinky ones and make them better, more productive, happier and, even more tolerable.

      You don’t need gobs of cash or even a lot of time to change your day for the better. All you need is the desire and will to put simple strategies into action.

      1. Develop an attitude of gratitude

      Barbara Koltuska-Haskin, Ph.D., neuropsychologist, and author of “How my Brain Works” suggests that you prevent having a lousy day as soon as you wake up in the morning.

      Practice gratitude.

      Keep a journal next to the bed and, every morning, record several things, people, situations, etc. for which you are grateful. Can’t think of anything? How about the fact that you woke up? Add to that any of the other conditions of your life that make you better off than others in the world.

      Journaling once or twice a week for six weeks leads to happiness and it just so happens that happiness leads to success.

      “Happy individuals are predisposed to seek out and undertake new goals in life and this reinforces positive emotions, said Sonja Lyubomirsky, Ph.D.

      “Happy people are more likely to achieve favorable life circumstances,” she concludes.

      2. Then, set aside “me” time before you start the day

      “It is important to take time for yourself in the morning,” according to Koltuska. If you enjoy exercising, this is the perfect time for it.

      “Physical activity may help bump up the production of your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins,” said the staff at mayoclinic.org. It doesn’t take jogging or working out at the gym to achieve a rush of endorphins, either.

      “… any aerobic activity, such as a nature hike, can contribute to this same feeling,” they continue.

      Plan a morning neighborhood walk before you begin your workday.

      3. Make prioritizing a habit

      Most real estate agents have more tasks to accomplish than a day has hours. Stop attempting the impossible and prioritize accomplishing the three to five most important tasks to get done each day.

      “Setting the right kind of goals not only lifts our performance but also makes us feel good,” according to Caroline Webb, author of “How to Have a Good Day: Harness the Power of Behavioral Science to Transform Your Working Life.”

      What’s a “right kind of goal?” Something important, that will impact your business or life. Have at least one of these goals on your list and, at the end of the day, achieving that goal (or making a big dent in it) will bring you a sense of accomplishment according to Leo Babauta at zenhabits.net.

      The number of goals you set is important as well. “Have a full schedule today? Cut it in half. You don’t need to do everything on that list,” said Babauta.

      “If you cut your list down and do only half the things you want to do for today, you’ll have a much better day.”

        It may not seem like it, but winter is almost over. The “famine” part of the equation will be history and we can wallow in the “feast” that spring brings.

        1. 1. Take action, even if it’s puny

        “Your income right now is a result of your standards, it is not the industry, it is not the economy,” claims motivational coach Tony Robbins. Easy for him to say when he doesn’t work in real estate, right?

        If you’re familiar with Robbins you’ll know that he’s big on taking action – especially if it’s “massive.” Even a small step toward your goals, however, helps raise those standards he speaks about.

        “Even if you take the wrong action, if you keep changing your approach you can succeed in anything,” according to Robbins.

        Actions to consider taking during the remaining downtime include:

        • Clean up and organize your CRM
        • Prepare a mailing list of past clients
        • Research a farm area for listings
        • Organize a summer event for past clients

        One action – just one step toward a goal – taken every day can move you from inertia to progress.

        1. Turn the eyes upside down

        While people you hang out with can stifle your professional progress, “the what that you surround yourself with …can either propel you forward…or hold you back,” according to Amy Blaschka at Forbes.com.

        In other words, get out of the office, the car and your head by changing your environment. Samuel R. Sommers, associate professor of psychology at Tufts University claims that this one change can lead to “a burst of fresh thinking and increased drive.”

        Take the laptop to a coffee shop or, if it’s not too frosty outdoors, head to the local park. Invite a prospect for coffee or lunch. Take a walk in nature.

        1. Watch, listen, read

        The world is filled with motivational coaches, speakers, and gurus. Take advantage of their knowledge by scheduling time each day to watch, listen to or read their works.

        Winnie the Pooh fans will recall Christopher Robin’s admonition that “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

        We tend to forget this fact when we aren’t actively participating in whatever it is that reminds us of our greatness.
