If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to be more productive this spring, look at two tips we’ve rounded up from productivity experts. We think they’re a good place to start.

      1. Quit focusing on the wrong stuff

Which tasks that you perform in your workday produce the best results? Make a list. Those tasks should be your focus and the rest should either be discarded or handed off to someone else.

They simply aren’t worth your time and performing them makes you less productive.

If you need help figuring out what to keep and what goes, “Consider tracking everything you do, the time it takes to complete each task, and the results,” suggests CamMi Pham, at medium.com.

“Then go back, assess your list to see what did (or didn’t) prove fruitful, and consider your findings to optimize for future tasks.”

      2. Eliminate distractions

Many of us suffer from distraction-itis. For me, it’s the cute little miniature pinscher that sits on her own chair next to my desk. What a time stealer!

For many, it’s the phone. The average mobile phone user picks up his/her phone 1,500 times per week, which works out to an estimated 3 hours and 16 minutes daily. (crossrivertherapy.com)

When eliminating distractions, which is critical to becoming more productive, it isn’t enough to just put the phone in another room. It will still ring when you get a call and chime to notify you of texts and voicemail.

The First Time Buyer Series is shown above. To learn more, Click Here.

Turn it off. The same goes for email on your laptop or desktop. Create a dedicated time to check the phone for messages, to check your email, and to attend to whatever else commonly distracts you during the workday.

      Why?

“There is clearly a direct connection between the various distractions at work and productivity,” according to Juliet Dreamhunter, a certified goal success coach.

And the reason we’re so easily distracted? Apparently, our attention span is 8.25 seconds. That’s less than a goldfish’s at 9 seconds, according to Steven Zauderer, CEO of CrossRiverTherapy.

If it’s an irresistible pup, your kids, or coworkers, use those 8.25 seconds wisely and figure out how to minimize distractions and work at your full capacity.

May this be the year your productivity soars!

She keeps track of our grocery lists, knows what music we prefer, keeps us up-to-date on the news, wakes us in the morning, and wishes us sweet dreams at night.

Yet, Alexa’s true identity is a mystery. But, like duct tape and a Swiss army knife, she’s indispensable to millions of Americans. She’s not without her share of controversy, however. If that’s what’s keeping you from utilizing a smart speaker, perhaps you should reconsider.

She has some pretty amazing skills

Out of the box, Alexa can help you with many everyday tasks, But, she has additional skills as well, which are worth digging into.

“At their simplest, Alexa skills are like smartphone apps. They are created by developers from third-party companies,” according to Alistair Charleton at gearbrain.com.

“Some skills work entirely on their own, while others are required to make Alexa interact with something else, such as an online service like Spotify, or a smart home product like a Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner,” he notes.

You’ll find a list of some of the more popular skills at amazon.com.

Alexa, remind me to stop procrastinating

Time management is one of our favorite ways to use Alexa.

Agents who cold-call for a set period of time may find this one handy as well. Ask Alexa to remind you when you can stop. Or, take periodic short breaks and she will remind you when it’s time to get back to it.

She’ll also help you keep track of everything on your daily calendar when you connect it to your smart speaker. Echo supports the following calendars:

        • Microsoft Exchange
        • Apple iCloud calendar
        • Microsoft Outlook
        • Google G Suite or Gmail
        • Microsoft Office 365

Just like in those futuristic movies, “Alexa, what’s on my calendar today?” will have her reading it off to you while you shave or put on your makeup.

        Learn how at amazon.com.

        Alexa: admin extraordinaire

Finally, you can stop all the grunt work and pass it off to “someone” else:

        • How many times have you been writing something and wish you had a better word? Alexa will find it for you. She can also offer up definitions for words.
        • Research: From reminding you what riparian rights are to keeping current on COVID-19, Alexa is at the ready.
        • Keep track of the tasks you need to perform for listing or buying clients with an Alexa-created list. Or, you’re at your desk and remembered you’re almost out of milk. “Alexa, put milk on my shopping list,” will let you forget about it and get back to work.
        • Take Alexa on the road with Echo Auto, $49.99 right now at amazon.com. Load her up with the addresses of homes you’ll be touring and she’ll guide you to each one. Time is Non-Refundable…Use it With Intention

It’s amazing how easily we can get distracted and before you know it hours have been lost and your day is behind you.

Time seems to have the ability to expand and contract based on how we fill it.

If only two items need to be accomplished in a day, those two items somehow end up taking most of day. Yet when a day is packed with 5 or 6 important tasks to complete somehow it takes the same amount of time.

Einstein believed that time wasn’t linear.

In fact he’s quoted saying, “The separation between past, present and future is only an illusion, although a convincing one.”

Maybe that’s not a bad idea to live by. It certainly makes it easier to focus your attention on the present moment.

However you decide to focus, make sure you focus with intention.

Prioritize the tasks that you need to complete each day. Then keep your list handy and in front of you to help you stay focused. If you find yourself getting distracted ask if your distraction trumps the importance of the items on your list.

With intention guiding you, accomplishing your daily goals becomes easier and more rewarding…

…and there’s nothing like the feeling you get from crossing items off your list at the end of the day.
